Why are we, beneficiaries of the widest opportunities for education, good health and advancement ever known for women, living such miserable, stressed-out lives? Is it our jobs? Our families?īrigid Schulte is an award-winning journalist for The Washington Post with two school-age daughters. Welcome to our lives – the lives of early 21st century working women juggling responsible careers, family, home and marriage without catastrophe! How did we get here? We have the kind of lives that our mothers and grandmothers fought hard to achieve, so that we, their daughters and granddaughters, could indeed grow up to be anything we wanted, including doctors, scientists, astronauts and, yes, even lawyers. The cell phone I'd just been using to talk to one of my kids' teachers has disappeared into the seat crack. The car tax sticker on my windshield has expired. on a Tuesday and I am racing down Route 1 in College Park, Maryland. ![]() Brigid Schulte begins this easy-to-read book that both hits home painfully and hilariously mirrors so much of the "overwhelm" of our lives, with a word picture: It is just after 10 a.m. ![]() ![]() ![]() What is easy to miss, however, is the sheer satisfaction the last chapters provide when the reader is open to the role of Robert Poste's child as an alternative lense through which to view the world of Cold Comfort Farm. The heavy-handed symbolism, overt allusions, caricatured character presentations, and excessively overt foreshadowing lead up to an ending that has been described, somewhat accurately, as saccharine. ![]() However, Gibbons provides the readers more, but certainly not less, than brilliant one-liners and hilarious descriptions of people and places in service of a satire. Her acerbic wit sets the stage for an outright lampooning. Gibbons's choice to set her novel in the oversexed and animalistic realm of rural Britain between the wars is on the surface an effort to lampoon and satirize novels that offered the reader little more than base entertainment. ![]() Entering into the universe of rural fiction so prevalent and popular during her time, Gibbons borrows and exaggerates many of the prevailing motifs made popular by writers long since forgotten. While Cold Comfort Farm is definitely a place like no other, it is actually a place like many others. Contrary to what it might seem like, Stella Gibbons does not create a world. ![]() ![]() ![]() Aside from dosing his willing wife with bizarre drug cocktails in order to sire a brood of freaks to populate his carnival, Al seems like a model father at the beginning of the book, but our view of him changes as the book progresses. I also admire the way the reader’s ideas about Al and Crystal Lil as parents changes slowly. P, both of whom are hard to stomach for different reasons, and you have a virtuoso ensemble cast. Throw in lesser characters like the Bag Man and Dr. Dunn could have easily fell into trite cliché when she has the two conjoined girls bicker and fight, but their personalities are rich enough that it’s never an issue. ![]() ![]() Elly and Iphy, the Siamese twins, are also done well, especially after they blossom into sexual maturity. His slow seizure of power behind the scenes at the Binewski Fabulon and his exploitation of his followers after the inception of the Aruturan amputation cult are handled perfectly. Arturo the Aqua Boy is deftly handled, a megalomaniacal little turd whose true gift is not his freakish nature, but his incredible powers of manipulation. Geek Love has a handful of the most memorable characters you’ll ever find. On the other hand, I thought it was sloppily edited, and Dunn’s prose ran the spectrum from sublime to clunky and ridiculous. On the one hand, it had a more profound impact on me than books-even some truly great ones-usually do. ![]() I had a schizophrenic reaction to this book. ![]() ![]() ![]() Could this counterfeit governess be a rogue’s redemption?
